 SPF refers to how long it takes for UV-exposed skin to redden. SPF only blocks UVB rays.

UPF clothing has some critical benefits over using traditional SPF products like sunscreen. UPF protection does not come off when exposed to moisture, such as water or sweat.

 A study in 2001 on the protection against UV rays in commercial summer clothing found that less than 30% of clothing made from cotton, linen and viscose fabrics had UPF values of more than 30. Cotton’s overall UPF rating degrades when it becomes wet, which means that summer clothing made from cotton provides even less protection if it used as clothing for water-based summer activities.

Fabric structure also places a role. Fabric with tighter, closer weaves provides less space for UV rays to penetrate the fabric. Certain types of fiber types also have stronger protection against others; for instance, 100% synthetic materials--especially 100% polyester--have a higher UPF rating than natural materials.
