Kids' Feet Grow Faster Than You Think: A Quick Guide to Checking Shoe Fit

If your child's shoes seem to fit perfectly one week and feel tight the next, you're not imagining it. Kids' feet grow surprisingly fast, and footwear that's too small can quietly affect comfort, balance, and natural movement.

The good news? Checking the fit takes less than a minute at home. Here's how.

What the Right Fit Looks Like

The gold standard is simple, and you already carry the measuring tool with you: your finger.

Leave about a child's finger's width of space between their longest toe and the end of the insole, roughly the width of an adult index finger, or about 5 to 10 millimetres at the front of the shoe.

That little gap matters. When toes press against the front of the shoe, they can't spread and flex the way they're meant to, and natural toe movement gets restricted. The extra room lets growing feet breathe and function.

A quick check: remove the insole if you can, have your child stand on it, and see where their longest toe lands. If the toe is at or over the edge, it's time to size up. (Remember, the longest toe isn't always the big toe.)

Tie these checks to something routine, maybe the start of a month or a seasonal wardrobe swap, so a too-tight pair never catches you by surprise.

Signs It May Be Time to Size Up

Kids don't always say "these feel tight," so their behaviour and their shoes often speak for them. Watch for:

  • Frequent tripping: a sudden increase in stumbling can point to shoes that throw off their stride.
  • Complaints of leg fatigue or cramping: achy legs after normal activity may mean cramped feet are working too hard.
  • Toe walking: walking up on the toes can be a response to shoes that lack room at the front.
  • Uneven sole wear: flip the shoes over; uneven wear may signal a fit issue.

Red marks or curled toes after taking off shoes are clear signs the fit has gotten too tight, too.

The Bottom Line

Little feet grow fast, and staying on top of shoe fit is one of the simplest ways to support your child's comfort and natural movement. Look for a finger's width of space at the toe, watch for the warning signs, and check in on a schedule that matches your child's age.
